The Lottery Winner Problem: Why More Money Doesn’t Fix Your Relationship With It
The familiar story of a windfall that goes wrong is usually about habits, not luck.
Most of us have heard some version of the story. Someone gets a sudden, large sum of money, and a few years later it is gone. The details change, and the shape stays the same. Whether any given story is exactly true matters less than why it feels so believable.
Money amplifies more than it changes
If your relationship with money is steady, more of it tends to make things steadier. If it is anxious, more money can make the anxiety larger, because there is more to lose. If it runs on excitement, more money can fund more excitement.
The same thing happens at a smaller scale. A raise, a bonus or a refund often arrives and the habits stay exactly where they were. The new money gets absorbed into the old pattern.
A windfall is a mirror. It shows the habits you already had at a larger size.
Why this is good news
It would be depressing if more money meant more trouble. It does not. It means the thing worth working on is the relationship, and that can be worked on at any income. A person who has noticed how they respond to a good day, a bad day and a surprise is better prepared for any amount.
Three questions that travel well
- What do I tend to do when I feel lucky?
- What do I tend to do when I feel behind?
- Who do I become around someone else’s opinion of me?
Notice that none of the questions is about how much. They are about states, and states come with you at every income.
This is an education piece, not a financial plan, and it does not suggest what to do with any particular sum.
The last time you had a little more money than expected, what was the first thing you did with it, and what had you been feeling?
